OVERVIEW
This free activity, entitled “Expert Insights in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Current Challenges and Future Directions,” consists of four brief presentations and panel discussions, a Learning Assessment, and an Evaluation form.
MEDIUM: Virtual Lecture
INTERNET RELEASE DATE: March 31, 2009
CE AVAILABLE UNTIL: March 31, 2010
Estimated time to complete this activity: 2 hours and 15 minutes
TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
ACTIVITY PURPOSE
This activity is intended to assist pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in understanding how to manage patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a complex, heterogeneous disease that is often fatal in adult patients. Advances in the treatment of pediatric ALL have not yet been translated into similar improvements in adult patients. Healthcare professionals who treat adult patients with ALL must maintain an up-to-date critical understanding of a long list of parameters that affect management options for this disease. These parameters include: risk assessment; clinical features; disease genetics; patient pharmacodynamics, patient pharmacogenetics, and minimal residual disease; predictors of treatment-related toxic effects; new treatment options and protocols; transplantation options; and availability of suitable clinical trials. Results of recent studies indicate improvements in many of these areas but provide little guidance on whether and how to incorporate advances into clinical practice. ALL has not yet received the attention of nationally reputable providers of practice guidelines, such as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Thus, healthcare professionals who treat adult patients with ALL would benefit from educational programs that engage them in critical discussions of current challenges, new options, and the future outlook for this difficult disease.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Outline treatment challenges associated with Philadelphia chromosome–positive ALL
- Review current and future treatment options for ALL in adults
- Cite outcomes data for young adults with ALL who are treated with pediatric or adult therapeutic regimens
- Explain the prognostic implications of minimal residual disease in various ALL patient populations
