There is no fee for this educational activity.

NOTE. Participants in the live teleconference entitled Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Why Should I Take My Medications? are not permitted to receive credit for this activity.

This activity is intended to assist nursing professionals in understanding the latest advances in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and the importance of medication adherence.

An estimated 1.4 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).1 IBD, which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is a chronic condition that can lead to colorectal cancer when left untreated.2 Unfortunately, optimal treatment of IBD can be difficult to achieve. High-grade evidence for appropriate therapeutic management of Crohn's disease is lacking in current research.3 Moreover, management of IBD requires a consistent, daily treatment regimen, yet 20% to 40% of patients report non-adherence to their IBD medication.2,4 Factors associated with non-adherence vary significantly between studies, but often include gender, lifestyle, and presence of symptoms.2,4,5 Currently, there is a need to educate patients and healthcare professionals on the most recent findings regarding IBD medication management and adherence.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease
  • List medications used to treat inflammatory bowel disease
  • Explain the goals of therapy for inflammatory bowel disease
  • Cite factors that contribute to medication non-adherence
  • Identify issues that could arise as a result of non-adherence
  • Recount practical strategies to help patients adhere to medication
